Hard Visit to Dekalb

Today was tough. I think this was the first time I’ve ever cried leaving a shelter.

Today, I spent my afternoon at DeKalb County Animal Services to get pictures of some dogs & meet some that often get overlooked. There is an overwhelming amount of dogs in this facility. You can see the stress in these dogs’ faces & body language. There are even more dogs in tiny crates/kennels in the back because there is not enough space (not open to the public). I spoke with several very kind volunteers, and was told that each dog gets out only once every 5-7 days because of how many dogs there are. Only the volunteers take them out for walks. These dogs deteriorate so quickly in a place like this. I saw how absolutely so stressed they are in this place. They need out.

I ask that if you ever have the time to take a dog out for the day or for the weekend, foster, or adopt a dog, PLEASE visit DeKalb County Animal Services. There are so many dogs deteriorating in this shelter that need out ASAP. Even by taking them out for just a day, you are helping them!!!! Please visit https://dekalbanimalservices.com to learn more about these dogs and more!

Dogs I got to interact with today:

Pepsi Lae: Pepsi was the sweetest girl!! She is an energetic dog that was so eager to play & interact with people. She would make the perfect addition to an active family!! She would love to accompany someone on fun adventures. She is dog & people friendly!!!

Jelly Donut: Jelly was such a BEAUTIFUL sweet dog. She was so excited to be let out of her kennel. She was leaning up against her kennel waiting for someone to get her out. She loved to explore and play! She is the perfect medium size dog.

Laurie: The biggest, cuddliest Cane Corso baby ever. She was so sweet & gentle. She wanted to be next to us the whole time she was out in the play yard. She was so happy to be out with people. She would be the best family dog & couch potato!

Lil TT: The teeniest pup at the shelter & such a sweet heart. Her tail was wagging the whole time she was around the volunteer & I. She cuddled up next to me the whole time

Mandy: The absolute sweetest dog in the world. She looked so terrified in her kennel but as soon as she wanted the play yard, she was a different dog. She was so affectionate & gentle. She had such a great medium energy level that would fit well with most anyone. She would be an awesome family dog!

Tarulsa: My absolute FAVORITE dog of the day. I would adopt her in a heartbeat if I could. Based on the scars from her face, we believe that she was used as a bait dog for fighting rings. She was timid when we brought her out of her kennel to the play yard, but she quickly warmed up. She melted into me & wanted to be by my side the whole time. She was able to interact with another dog & was so happy! She is the sweetest dog ever. I am obsessed with her.
