Welcome to SECC!
Warm welcome to everyone who is reading this first blog post! My name is Avery Bennett, and I am a student at the University of Georgia (go dawgs!). I have always had a deep love and appreciation for one of God’s biggest blessings; animals. Growing up, my family and I always rescued a variety of animals and housed them until they found loving homes (of course, we kept some ourselves). This passion of mine continued to grow with me throughout my college career. I started working with a lovely group of advocates that focus on placing dogs that are on the euthanasia list for Dekalb County Animal Services and Fulton County Animal Services. This group inspired me to start fostering urgent dogs and give them the proper love and care that they so greatly deserve. This only fueled the fire in my heart more for these animals, and I knew I needed to take this a step further. As a full-time college student, that can be kind of difficult. I questioned what I could possibly do to make as big of an impact as I am hoping. Through endless support from my family and friends, along with guidance from the Lord, I knew I could not give up on this passion of mine. A family friend, Allyson Reeves, came to me and wanted to help me pursue this dream. She has helped me put this together in order to save as many dogs and cats as possible. I owe the biggest thank you to her.
SECC stands for “Saving Every Canine and Cat.” Our goal is to advocate for the dogs and cats housed in shelters in the biggest SEC cities. By doing this, we hope to reach campuses and student bodies that are willing to help get these animals out of the shelters and in to loving homes. We also plan on educating the public about how we can stop the vicious cycle of surrendered and abandoned pets. Different resources on this website are listed to help people spay and neuter their pets, donate pet food to families who need it, provide medical care for sick/injured/elderly animals, and emergency boarding services for when life throws us curveballs.
Each week, dogs will be spotlighted from a shelter in the following areas: Atlanta, GA, Gainesville, GA, Athens, GA, and Tuscaloosa, AL. These dogs will more than likely be on the urgent list for these shelters. The urgent list for shelters are comprised of dogs that, for some reason or another, are scheduled for euthanasia. From my experience fostering multiple dogs on the e-list, these animals just need love, patience, and proper decompression. The shelter is a stressful and overwhelming environment — causing these animals to quickly deteriorate. Let’s try to get as many of these animals out of the shelter and into loving foster or forever homes!
Our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter will be updated every day with new events, resources, and spotlighted pets to keep our supporters and fellow advocates (you) in the loop of what is going on in the world of shelter animals.
I thank you so much for being here and showing support to such an important cause. I cannot wait for the journey ahead!
